Monte is Out!

So Monte Cook is out at WotC. This is likely good for those of us that prefer D&D as a non-bean-counting exercise. Of course, time will tell the tale. Speaking of 5e the public playtest is set to begin on May, 24 weekend - most Canadians are out partying and celebrating the Queen's Birthday with fireworks.

  1. I have a lot of respect for Monte Cook and the other 3e designers. When 3e came out, I felt like the wild collection of rules that D&D had become were made sane again, and I loved it! They also revitalized table-top gaming in a way that we probably won't see for a very long time.

Having said all that, I'm not too upset that he's leaving the D&D team. For one, he's being doing fine on his own. For another, I felt like his articles about the direction of the game were a bit out of touch with some of the changes in table top that we've seen with both indie- and retro-gaming.

Mearls, on the other hand, seems to be pretty infatuated with the OSR. So I'm hopeful that he "gets" what it is that I like about the retro games.

In the meantime, ACKS just arrived at my house!
